Grants Awarded by HUD and HTF to the Shalom Ecumenical Center (SEC)
The first grant of $1,676,900 is to build affordable housing in Colville, WA. It will be a three story elevator-serviced building and contain 13 one-bedroom apartments for very low income seniors and one manager's apartment. It will be called the Hudesman House. SEC had earlier received a grant from the WA state Housing Trust Fund (HTF) for $1,141,778 so funding for the project is nearly complete. An additional $400,000 may be needed to complete the project unless the estimated cost of the project can be reduced to stay below the $2,818,678 total of the two grants. Several directors of SEC will travel to Colville in December to meet with local people to establish a new non-profit corporation to oversee construction and operation of the Hudesman House.
The second grant of $1,814,200 from HUD is to build the Kennewick Perry Suites for very low income adults with developmental and physical disabilities. This project is sponsored jointly by SEC and Modern Living Services (MLS), a group of parents and other citizens concerned about affordable housing for people with developmental disabilities. Unfortunately, HTF did not provide a grant for this facility so considerable additional funding is needed to proceed with this project. MLS and SEC will seek to obtain additional funding from other sources.
